Course Description

The primary objective of this course to have students scan the press and the Internet and to report on significant events on an assigned topic during the scanning period. The secondary objective is to assist students in improving their writing skills in English.

59 topics have been selected for this course. Students are divided into 49 groups. The course takes place over 6 periods. For each period, one of the 59 topics has been assigned to each group.

For each period, each group has to post a report consisting of 6 short paragraphs. Each paragraph summarizes in a concise and factual manner an important event that happened during the period within the topic assigned. With each paragraph is associated one link to an external web resource that contains more information on the event. Reports have to be posted before midnight of the deadline date. The software prevents posting of late reports.

During the next 7 days, the reports can be graded by Professors and other Students. Each student has the obligation to grade 12 reports and Professors grade a selection of at least 45 out of 49 reports. The grades are on the European scale of A-F, where A stands for Excellent and F stands for Fail. The Professors may choose to give an F to reports that have not been posted on time.

After the period of 7 days all grades become public.

The final grade for each group is based on the average grade by the Professors (weight of 60), and on the average grade by the Students (weight of 20). It may be adjusted by the Professor to take into account other factors.

The final grade for the Student is based on three components:

  1. The group Grade (Weight of 80)
  2. The difference between grades given by the student to other groups and the average grade given to them by the Professor (Weight of 10)
  3. The difference between grades given by the student to other groups and the average grade given to them by the Students (Weight of 10)

In addition, during each period 50 paragraphs of the reports are rewritten by editors. Corrected paragraphs are posted along with the originals, so that students can appreciate their mistakes. No grading is associated with this activity.
